Regenerative Garden Design

We design and install beautiful gardens that cultivate soil health, biodiversity, and joy. Our design process is grounded in the principles of Permaculture and Regenerative Land Management. With this as our foundation, we’re ready to reimagine the outdoor space of your home or business into one that works in harmony with nature, not against it. A garden oasis that delights the senses while increasing biodiversity and soil health. A climate-resilient native plant habitat for pollinators, native bees and beneficial insects. An abundant edible landscape that feeds your family. A wildflower meadow to replace your lawn. A vibrant cottage garden buzzing with life. A welcoming patio, pond, or fire pit to enjoy with family and friends. Whatever your vision and budget, we can help you transform your space - big or small - into something magical.

We believe that regenerative, climate resilient gardens should be attainable for everybody. We craft custom solutions for each client we partner with - to suit your unique budget and needs - using three Design Packages as our starting point.

  • Consult

For those on a limited budget, your dream garden is still within reach. We can consult and provide the best design solutions for your space, as well as detailed planting recommendations, for you to implement yourself, on your own timeline.

  • Consult & Design

For those wanting a detailed roadmap, but the freedom to install yourselves, we offer a full design package that includes everything but the install.

  • Design & Install

The full-service package. Kick back while we do the work, and before you know it, your garden will be ready to enjoy!

How It Works

  • The Survey

We ask all new clients to complete a comprehensive online survey and follow-up interview to help us understand the vision, wants, and needs for your space. This will cover everything from your hobbies and favorite plants to your desired level of maintenance, to your ultimate wish list - from cut flowers to rainwater capture to refined entertaning spaces - and even your vision for the future. All of this informs the design process.

  • The Tour

Together we explore your space. Our team will photograph, measure, and document the space to help build our site plans and inform the design process. This is your opportunity to show us what you love and- want to change - in your existing space.

  • The Farm

Clients are invited to visit the Roots & Wild farm and gardens, where we can discuss various plants and design features to further define your vision. We love to share cuttings from our own gardens with our client’s gardens whenever we can!

  • The Proposal

Our team will present an initial proposal that includes in-depth information about your climate zone, microclimates, topography, soil, and watershed, in addition to mood boards and an initial plant list.

  • The Design

The design will include detailed maps, elevations, and a comprehensive plant system design. We will walk you through the design solutions, answer all of your questions, and adapt as necessary before finalizing the plans.

  • The Install

Whether we’re installing your garden for you, or you’ve chosen to do the install yourself, once the design process is over, the fun part begins: bringing the vision to life.

  • The Knowledge

We want to make sure every client - and their new garden - is set up for success. Once the install is complete, we will provide you with a digital handbook that covers seasonal care, maintenance, irrigation, troublshooting, and more. Remember, your garden is a network of living organisms and it will, like nature, evolve over time. We will help you build the skills to steward your garden like a pro.

  • The Afterparty

Well, kind of. The first year caring for a new garden and countless new plant babies can be daunting. We totally get it. That’s why we offer all clients the option of a Year One consulting package, consisting of four quarterly on-site consulting and maintenance sessions to help you navigate the unique seasonal needs of your new oasis.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Permaculture is a design philosophy that aims to mimic natural ecosystems, guided by principles that emphasize community, biodiversity, renewal, and symbiosis. We incorporate these principles into our design work to ensure that each garden we design is benefiting the land, soil, and the people who will enjoy it today and for years to come.

  • A regenerative approach to gardening and land management emphasizes the importance of maintaining soil health naturally - and aims to create systems that continue to revitalize, rather than deplete, the soil.

We design biodiverse plant guilds that ensure the return of essential organic matter to the soil, season after season, to support climate resilience, water retention, erosion reduction, invasive pest mitigation, and happy, healthy plants.

We also encourage the inclusion of a composting system to create a closed-loop soil regeneration system requiring minimal external inputs and amendments.

  • We choose to use applicable permaculture principles in partnership with regenerative strategies in order to mitigate the impacts of climate change, so that we can do our part to support biodiversity, soil health, and resilience long into the future.

Thoughtful design can store and conserve water, prevent erosion, minimize wildfire risk, produce yields of vegetables, fruits, and beneficial herbs, support native bees and beneficial insects.

Collectively, regenerative gardens have the ability to fight carbon emissions by increasing carbon storage in plants.

In short - we aim to support the needs of the planet and the community in addition to the needs of our clients.

  • It depends! Much like nature, a resilient garden develops and evolves over time. We like to plant in most perennials in Fall, with a second planting in Spring if the specific plant matrix for a design requires it. Fall plantings allow shrubs and trees to settle in and benefit from rainy season before the heat of summer settles in.

  • This is dependent on the scope of your project and your personal requirements. It will vary from client to client - but we will ensure that timelines are clearly communicated early in the design phase.

  • Absolutely! Through the interview process we dive deep into your lifestyle and ability to tend to your garden, so we can deliver design solutions that fit your lifestyle and schedule - from low maintenance, drought tolerant plantings to automated irrigation systems, we will set you and your garden up for success.
